Say hello to another comeback kid, the osprey. The osprey, like the California brown pelican and the American bald eagle, was once the victim of the pesticide DDT that caused its shells to become brittle and break, interfering with the ospreys' reproductive cycles. That combined with humans removing dead trees in which ospreys nested because they needed leafless trees in which to nest and make a quick escape (because osprey wings easily got caught in dense foliage) resulted in the osprey being categorized in several states (in America) as endangered. Again, it is a case of us doing nothing proactive to reverse the course or fate of the osprey. All we had to do was provide habitat by not destroying it and stop using DDT! (Platforms on top of utility poles and not removing dead trees was a simple enough course of action. And use of DDT has been banned in the United States.) Now these fisher birds fly high in the skies and dive into the water for fish as they continue their comeback and prove anything is possible! A great book for kids, and a beautiful book for the coffee table, Bellissima Publishing, LLC has done it again with a book to educate, entertain and delight!
