Perfume

Comparing perfume with music is easy. They both float through the air and they both are luxuries we could probably do without. But, why should we go without when music and perfume make our lives sweeter. “If we are all truly damned then we need to find new romance. Put your best dress on. Put your best suit on. The smell of your perfume makes it sweeter” It is the simple proposition of TIN MAN’s new record “PERFUME”. Dressing up is a communal effort to celebrate the now and make the best of our shared experience. Regardless of life going well or badly, we can all participate in the cultural events around us, we can still go out tonight. The music of Perfume drifts on the edge of dance music. Probably a bit too slow for the dance floor, it none-the-less seems to be flirting with all the stories that could transpire there (getting lost, meeting friends, having fun, falling in love). You can hear many of the same jazzy house chords you would find in house music or the angular harmony and twisted bass lines of techno, yet the music seems to only reference genres rather than fit into them. Throughout the record is the heavy beat of dance music tying an amalgam of styles jazz, rock, blues, bossa nova, new wave, house, and techno together. Flirting with genres is an overlaying theme in the record, as the lyrics speak about different music sub-cultures being at our disposal. Rockers and ravers are lumped together in TIN MAN’s world. Dressing up and putting on perfume is not about joining a group or a transient youth culture, TIN MAN knows youth cultures do not last, its rather about individuality and sharing, and it is an invitation to participate in the music and story of the moment. Now you can be a rocker, tomorrow you can be a raver, it is up to you what scent you choose. In the past perfumes were used by kings to cover up their stink and by soldiers to palette the stench of war. TIN MAN suggests we all put on our best and come out to play. “Your sweet perfume ma
