Bloody Mary
Berlin’s Bloody Mary presents “Black Pearl", the lead single and title track from her forthcoming debutalbum, featuring interpretations by Sascha Funke (BPitchControl) and Jay Haze (Contexterrior/TuningSpork). Inspiredby Charles Baudelaire’s controversial Les Fleurs du Mal (TheFlowers of Evil), Bloody Mary headed into the studio with her friend and collaborator Sierra Sam. Her work culminated in a series of productions that reflect the French poet’s contrasting dynamics, discovering beauty buried beneath the darkness. Hencethe title, Black Pearl. Mary’s original albumversion begins by blending breakbeat and tribalelements, paving the way for the cinematicstrings. This track is true to Contexterrior’s manifesto of releasing music fit for both the dancefloor and the headphones: Its percussive stomp gets bodies moving, while its sweepingstrings provides the soundtrack for daydreams. BPitchmainstay Sascha Funke contributes a remix that begins with hypnotic pings and pulsating sub-bass, but after cleansing the palette with this stark minimalism, we hear refreshing melodic chimes gush forth, overwhelming the taste budslike a shot of mangonectar. Brave and majestic, Sascha’s remixis a glowing beacon of optimism for any darknightclub. Next is labelfounder Jay Haze’s edit, which morphs the melody into a shimmering deep house context. Finally, a second appearance from Sascha with his sparse rework, a beats-only track for the more adventurous DJs who know how to work it.
