The Best Of
Outlaws
When rock and roll came along, we knew that the Brits couldn't
compete with the Americans. In some cases we had the talent but
until the Beatles and the beat boom in 1963, the performers had
to battle with staid and safe productions made by men in white
coats at EMI, Decca, Philips and Pye Records. The one exception
and the man ahead of the pack was Joe Meek, who created his
mystic sounds at his studio above a leather shop at 304 Holloway
Road, Islington in north London. He loved echo, distortion and
strange instruments and he was certainly a pioneer, a maverick
and an outlaw. This double CD, appropriately enough by the
Outlaws, contains 28 of his productions. Meek wrote 18 of them,
either under his own name or as Robert Duke.
