Absolute Beginners
Out of print in the U. S. One of the finest soundtracks to come out of the '80s. Featuring David Bowie crooning Sinatra style on the title track, the music sort of mixes pop-swing-jazz stylings of late 50's Britain (when the movie takes place) with modern artists. Features 18 tracks, with contributions from Sade, Style Council, Ray Davies, Gil Evans and more. The real highlights, besides the Bowie numbers ('Volare'!), include a swingin' jazz torch tune by Sade ('Killer Blow') and actress Patsy Kensit (Lethal Weapon 2) who does a wispy voiced jazz beatnik number complete with bongos and background finger snaps. The film was directed by Julian Temple, a hot music video director back in the '80s, who also directed Bowie's epic 'Blue Jean' video, and while the film itself is flawed, Temple's music background comes raging through. Virgin. 1986.
