Cecil Taylor
By 1960, the time of these recordings, Cecil Taylor had reached a stage of development that was both individualistic and forward looking. His style was uniquely his and it had an awesome authority that has remained with him to the present day. He is now a stylistic leader and his playing has proved to be the inspiration behind two generations of pianists, as well as musicians on a wide range of other instruments. His colleagues here respond to the strength of his music in different ways. Bassist Buell Neidlinger and drummer Dennis Charles were as conversant with the aims of the music as they were cognizant of the pianist's own requirements. Tenor saxophonist Archie Shepp, who makes his recording debut here, completes the line up.
