Each Man Kills the Thing He Loves
Gavin Friday
Gavin Friday is probably best known for being the front-man of the Virgin Prunes, Dublin's early 1980's post-punkers. 'Each Man Kills' shows a slightly calmer Friday at play, making the same transition to Scott Walker-inspired dark, spiked cabaret that kindred spirits Nick Cave and Marc Almond also did in their own solo careers to one extent or another. Friday is accompanied by the Irish film composer Maurice "The Man" Seezer and New York City hipster avant-jazz musicians like Bill Frisell, Marc Ribot and Fernando Saunders. The album is a mood piece, trying to find that late night, film-noir jazz-club sound, which it manages to do very well.
