King Vidor's first Technicolor film tells the story of Robert Rogers, celebrated Indian fighter and leader of Rogers' Rangers. Set in 1759, the film follows the adventures of a young artist (Robert Young) and his roughneck friend (Walter Brennan) who, after a drunken escape from the angry father of the former's fiancee, join up at Crown Point to take off with Rogers (Spencer Tracy) and his band of veteran Indian fighters. Originally intended to be the first part of two, the film does not feature the adventurers in the Northwest Passage as this was to be covered in the unmade next instalment
