American detective Richard Duvall is given a top secret highly sensitive task by Monsieur Lefevre, Paris' Prefect of Police. The French ambassador in London has lost an ivory snuffbox, and it is Duvall's task to find it and retrieve it safely as quickly and invisibly as possible--on the day that was to be the beginning of his honeymoon. While Duvall is on his way to London from Paris, his new bride, Grace Ellicot Duvall, heads to Brussels, also at the suggestion of M. Lefevre. Other characters include an elderly antiques dealer with uncommon knowledge of international affairs, various ambassadors, and a German psychiatrist who serves only the most elite and wealthy clients. Grace's love for her husband is pitched against the honor of a nation as she attempts to free herself and Detective Duvall from the evil men who also want the snuffbox.
