Always struggling with all kinds of economic troubles, he worked as a tax officer chasing smugglers of liquors and tobacco and managed to enlighten himself by buying books. His luck changed when he met Benjamin Franklin, who encouraged him to seek fortune in America by giving letters of introduction.
