The Savage Season

Avery Field is haunted by the senseless slaughter of his years as an elephant hunter in Africa, but his life since then is uninspired. Eager for a last chance to gain the status and wealth he feels he is due, Field takes up the bizarre invitation from King George V to bring back a pair of tusks from a living woolly mammoth, believed to have survived on a remote island in the Canadian Arctic. Time is not on his side, for his perilous journey aboard the icebreaker Odessia unfolds on the eve of the First World War, leaving him only days to find the mammoth before the ship must return home. Struggling with guilt and stranded in an unforgiving wilderness, his quest may end up costing him his life.
