Daniel Owen's Ten Nights in the Black Lion: A Serial in Seventeen Parts written in 1859 - The Works of Daniel Owen

Late in 1859, on 20th Oct, Daniel Owen turned twenty-three years old and it was a significant year for him. His friend, Nathaniel Jones, had been asked by Rees and Co, the publishers of the Caernarfon Herald to edit a new magazine called "Charles o'r Bala". Nathaniel needed something to attract regular readers. He came up with an idea that fundamentally changed Daniel Owen's life. He asked Daniel to adapt and retell in Welsh a popular American serial about the evils of drink, entitled "Ten Nights in a Bar." He that Daniel took the plot of this tale and set in a town, just like Mold, and rewrote the plotline to showcase local characters so it would attract more readers and advertisers. So was born "Ten Nights in the Black Lion." This seventeen part serial, written by Daniel in 1959, has now been translated into English for the first time by popular writer Robert Lomas. The complete original text in Welsh has been curated by Dr John Hywel Roberts and is included to complement this new English translation. There is also an Introduction and an Appendix discussing the local dialect words used by Daniel Owen written by Dr John Hywel Roberts
