The Horse Ranch
Max Porter
This is the story of the making of a horse farm from scratch. The people involved in the development of a major horse farm are not necessarily the same people needed to run one. This ranch was before ranches were mechanized and other than a few railroads, horses were the means of transportation. It was a time when men still carried guns for protection. And from time to time had to use them. The main character grew up on a horse ranch. After trying several ways of life, decided that the life as a horseman was the best he had experienced. I have accidentally got myself in a mess. I am leaving town on the train. The problem is a coworker of mine's wife is leaving him, aboard the same train. He is going to think I have run off with his wife. He is a volatile sort who will most likely come looking for me with his gun strapped on. I don't know how I became involved in this. I grew up far away on a horse ranch in Indiana. My Dad wanted me to be a lawyer. I went to school in St Louis and became a lawyer. I was offered a job at a firm in St Louis. I worked there for a year and discovered I didn't want to be a lawyer.
