Qatar is a country in the Middle East with an area of 11,586 km² and a population of 1,758,800. The capital of Qatar is Doha. The majority religion is Sunni Islam, practised by 95% of the population, and the official language is Arabic. Qatar is a constitutional monarchy ruled by Hamad Khalifa al -Thani, Emir of Qatar and head of the Qatari state between 1995 and 2013. His son, Tamim succeeded him on 25 June 2013. The countries bordering Qatar are the island of Bahrain to the northwest and Saudi Arabia to the south. To the north, Qatar has access to the Persian Gulf.
