Eleven-year-old Ava is the only girl at school who wears a leather motorcycle jacket and has been motherless since she was three. She longs to have a cat, but she's had her fill of loss to such a degree that she even bursts into tears when faced with the death of a fish. Confronted by her father's remarriage, and faced with a kitten needing to be rescued, Ava is sent on a journey of personal discovery as she confronts the storms of life and learns to move from loneliness to companionship and from despair to hope.
