"She" is Ayesha, a mysterious white queen who reigns in the lost city of Kôr. Having learned the legend of her existence from a collection of ancient and medieval artifacts, three Englishmen set out for the heart of Africa, encountering shipwreck, fever, and cannibals along the way as they journey in search of the truth.

First published in 1887, Haggard revised his text several times, up to the "New and Revised Edition" of 1896. This last edition forms the basis of the present text.
