Survivor Care
Christy Gunter Sim
Dr. Christy Sim works diligently to serve the needs of survivors of sexual and gender-based violence. On any given Sunday morning, a pastor can look over the 100 members of the congregation and see 25 women and 14 men who have been crippled by domestic violence and trauma--no matter the race or socio-economic group. The church is more than a hospital for sinners, it is also an emergency room for those who have been sinned against. But emergency rooms are not the place for long-term care. More is needed.
Written especially for Christian mental health professionals and students, counselors, therapists, psychologists, and pastors, the author lays out a framework and shows why issues related to violence and abuse continue to plague our society. The goal of care is not merely to help victims survive but move on to healing and wholeness. Beginning with the neurobiology of trauma, this practical guide outlines three modes of biological reaction and introduces specific ways healing can occur. Then Sim addresses the importance of self-care and vicarious trauma, including behavioral signs and symptoms. The book throws into high relief how community partners, including churches, can help. Lastly, the book addresses standards of care, confidentiality, and other resources.
