Murder at the Shangri La

Lieutenant Marshall is on the Los Angeles police force when he suddenly gets called to a special detail in Las Vegas. He is there is to solve a large jewelry heist at the newly opened and posh Shangri-La Hotel where corrupt police, high rollers and burlesque dancers mix. Known as the most exclusive resort in the new city being built in the desert, he discovers a sinister plot boiling just beneath the surface. Traveling between Los Angeles and Las Vegas following clues in the case, several cases overlap and ultimately lead to murder in paradise. Reminiscent of film noir, this story takes place in the criminal underworld of Las Vegas in the 1940s. Written in the noir style of the 1940s and 50s, which has its deep roots in the American literary imagination of the pulp mystery genre, this novel explores the theme of crime, deception, guilt, deception, obsessive passion, murder, and the disintegrating psyche so common in noir fiction. Murder at the Shangri-La tells of a tough, cynical cop, visiting the seedy city, telling his story in narrative form, using slang, complete with violence (robbery, murder, corruption), and with the sexual undertones of the female characters. A must read for fans of this hard-boiled fiction genre.
