Hugo and Betsy live an ordinary life with their mum and dad. Despite being six-year-old twins, they are as different as chalk and cheese. Betsy is outgoing and loves attention, whereas her brother is serious and quiet. That is, until he comes across a rather strange and interesting black crow, Seamus O'Croake ... and discovers he can talk to him.
Seamus and his clan face dreadful problems. Members of the local council are threatening to destroy the wood in Southern Ireland in which they live. Can Hugo and his family help defeat this evil plan?
Hugo decides his family needs to travel to Ireland to stay with Grandpa and Granny O'Keefe and his other Irish relatives. He feels sure that he can find a solution - with the help of his smart cousin Sean, his rather mysterious Grandpa Shylock and some strange characters from local myths and legends...
