Charles Dickens' the Mystery of Edwin Drood

"A man is lucky if he is the first love of a woman. A woman is lucky if she is the last love of a man." The Mystery of Edwin Drood is one of the most celebrated books by the Victorian novelist Charles Dickens. It is basically a story of love, jealousy and murder with a detective tone. The beautiful orphan Rosa Bud is engaged to Edwin Drood, yet she is also secretly loved by her music teacher John Jasper, an opium addict who happens to be Edwin's uncle. While Rosa finds Jasper completely unsuitable for her and hates the way he treats her, Jasper informs her that he is foolishly enthralled by her and that he is ready to do anything to realize his dream. Furthermore, another young man named Neville Landless sees Rosa and falls in love with her too. Many events follow as Rosa's lovers go through different quarrels. One morning, the town learns about the mysterious murder of Edwin Drood and Neville Landless is suspected of the crime. The real murderer remains unknown to the readers, however, since Charles Dickens died before writing a conclusion to the book. Numerous attempts were made after Dickens's death to complete the story and different theories were developed to confirm that the true murderer is none but John Jasper.
