The Cornell note-taking process is a proven system for mastering information, rather than just recording facts. When taking notes during a lecture or meeting using the Cornell notes style you quickly record main ideas, cues, important concepts, and diagrams, etc. on the right side of the page, sometimes using symbols and abbreviations. This is the notes column. Following the lecture or meeting, on the left-hand side ( the recall column) you formalize or clarify any main ideas, concepts, terms, etc. that you have pulled from the right-hand side. This is helpful when preparing for exams or extracting pertinent information from business meetings. The space across the bottom of the page is where you summarize the information with a few sentences or a paragraph following the lecture or meeting.
