The winged man standing guard had not left her side since she'd been brought in, and the fact that no one else could see him gave her the willies. The man robbing the diner where Jenny worked had shot her in the leg, and then she had killed him with his own gun. It was kill or be killed, but the local authorities hadn't seen it that way-until now. They were releasing her and as of now she had no job, and no home to return to. Valyn the Slayer was just tired. He had just one desire, to be put to sleep for an eternity. Ever since he'd lost his small charge, the simple act of living seemed too much for him. He had only looked away for a moment, now she was gone, and he blamed himself. And now "Boss" was telling him his mate was here.... "She's a lovely girl. Broken too, if you want to know the truth of it. Perhaps you've heard her mentioned. She's the woman that saved that diner full of patrons about a week ago." He'd heard of it but didn't know her name. "The bill collectors are hounding her hourly. However, they are not putting the calls through to her room at the hospital for fear of upsetting her. She's made some very good friends while staying there." "What happened to her?" Boss told him what she'd done and how she'd been shot. "And the bill collectors? Why are they hounding her? I'm assuming that she has debt, but it's more than that, isn't it?" "Yes, she's now homeless and jobless. Also, with this other business of the credit card, there is no way that she can make anything work out right for her. Not without a great deal of help." Valyn sat down on the wire wheel that had been left behind when the house had been rewired. "Valyn, you told me that you were broken and why you thought so. But this woman, she can help you in ways that I cannot." "You could if you would just put me to sleep." Boss shook his head. "What if I don't go and see her? Don't take her as my mate? Because I don't think my life could be any better to have her with me. I'm not good around people anymore. I don't want to have someone depending on me for their wellbeing. It's too much."
