The Red Fairy Book
Andrew Lang
Publisher Marketing: The Red Fairy Book, the second in Andrew Lang 's Coloured Fairy Book series, was originally published in 1890. This edition contains all thirty-seven of the original stories and all ninety-nine of the original illustrations. *** The collections were specifically intended for children, and consequently edited for that end. *** When Andrew began publishing these books there were almost no English fairy tale books in circulation. The series proved of great influence in children 's literature, and inspired a host of imitators. The series also proved to be an inspiration to J. R. Tolken and his Middle-Earth collection of novels. *** The stories included in this book are: The Twelve Dancing Princesses; The Princess Mayblossom; Soria Moria Castle; The Death of Koschei the Deathless; The Black Thief and Knight of the Glen; The Master Thief; Brother and Sister; Princess Rosette; The Enchanted Pig; The Norka; The Wonderful Birch; Jack and the Beanstalk; The Little Good Mouse; Graciosa and Percinet; The Three Princesses of Whiteland; The Voice of Death; The Six Sillies; Kari Woodengown; Drakestail; The Ratcatcher; The True History of Little Goldenhood; The Golden Branch; The Three Dwarfs; Dapplegrim; The Enchanted Canary; The Twelve Brothers; Rapunzel; The Nettle Spinner; Farmer Weatherbeard; Mother Holle; Minnikin; Bushy Bride; Snowdrop; The Golden Goose; The Seven Foals; The Marvellous Musician; and The Story of Sigurd. * * * * Check out the other Andrew Lang books published by Flying Chipmunk Publishing at www. Contributor Bio: Lang, Andrew Andrew Lang (31 March 1844 - 20 July 1912) was a Scottish novelist, journalist, poet, critic and historian who was born in Selkirk, Scotland on March 31st 1844. He was the oldest of 8 children, born to John Lang and Jane Plenderleath Sellar. As a young boy, Lang attended the Selkirk Grammar School and then went on to attend Edinburgh Academy and the University of St. Andrews as well as Balliol College, Oxford. Andrew was a fan of Williams Shakespeare and folklore such as Grimm's Fairy Tales. This inspired Lang's love of myths, folk-tales and magic. In 1987 Andrew moved to London to become a journalist. That was also the year that he married Leonore Blanche Alleyne. They never had any children together. Andrew Lang created one of the best known collections of folk and fairy tales in the world....the "color" fairy book series. He often collaborated with his wife to translate stories, which were obtained from all over the world. Andrew Lang was known as one of the most versatile writers of his day. He is best known for his folklore and mythology books. In his spare time, Andrew loved to fish and play golf. He also loved to travel with his wife. They often travelled to France and Italy. During the last years of his life, Lang experienced a decline in his health. He died in the Tor-na-Coille Hotel in Banchory on July 20th 1912 of angina pectoris. He is buried at St. Andrews in the cathedral precincts. Contributor Bio: Speed, Lancelot Sir James Knowles (1831 - 13 February 1908) was an English architect and editor. He was born in London, the son of architect James Thomas Knowles and himself trained in architecture at University College and in Italy. He designed, amongst other buildings, three churches in Clapham, Lord Tennyson's house at Aldworth, the Thatched House Club, the Leicester Square garden (as restored at the expense of Baron Albert Grant), and Albert Mansions, Victoria Street, Westminster. However, his preferences led him simultaneously into a literary career. In 1860 he published The Story of King Arthur. In 1866 he was introduced to Alfred Lord Tennyson and later agreed to design his new house, Aldworth, on condition there was no fee; this led to a close friendship, Knowles assisting Tennyson in business matters and, among other things, helping to design scenery for The Cup when Henry Irving produced that play in 1880.
