Country music fans and performers love the songs of Merle Haggard. Sort of like the people of the previous generation loved the songs of Hank Williams. The songs are easy to play and sing and dance to. This play is a monologue about the life of Merle Haggard. He spent a lot of time behind bars and a lot of time in bars. Drinking and performing. His hero was Jimmy Rogers, the singing brakeman, so naturally Merle did a lot of riding in freight cars. He had a unique rich voice and his own guitar style. It didn't take long for him to become very popular when he started recording. His songs were about regular people and he projects the songs so sincerely and understandable, One big hit after another for25 years in a row. Any country music show you attend will for sure feature some Merle Haggard songs. This play gives a good background to who he was and where those songs came from.
