Millbank Penitentiary, An Experiment of Reformation is a written history of Millbank Prison, from its building up to its last days. Millbank Prison was a prison in Millbank, Pimlico, London, originally constructed as the National Penitentiary, and which for part of its history served as a holding facility for convicted prisoners before they were transported to Australia. It was opened in 1816 and closed in 1890. -Wikipedia The early history of Millbank is interesting on many accounts. It was like a ship at sea, its life centred in itself, cut off from the great world, and yet watched with deep concern by many of the foremost men of the day, and suffering from injudicious interference rather than neglect. It was on its trial, and with regard to the reformation of convicts, it did not, and could not, according to the author, fulfil the hopes of its founders.
