Robert Tipatue (Tippy) joins the Marines the day after Pearl Harbor is attacked. After boot camp, he becomes a motor pool mechanic. The night before he ships out, he and a few buddies go out to a bar where he befriends a lieutenant, that he comes to the aid of, who is getting his butt kicked in the bar's back alley. Weeks later, once overseas, the lieutenant gets Tippy assigned to his squadrons engine shop. Months later, Tippy and five other enlisted mechanics are trained to fly as needed ferry pilots. One early morning, the Japanese attack the air base, surrounding the officer's pilot's quarters, trapping them. During that same attack, Tippy ends up saving the life of an egotistical pilot, who has a major distain for enlisted pilots.
