Mother to Son: A Collection of Essays and Readings in African American Studies provides a multifaceted view of some of the issues that are pertinent to the discipline from the perspective of some of the most knowledgeable scholars in the field. This volume highlights topics such as identity, music, politics, and education, among others.

Mother to Son is an additional tool readers can use in the quest for a more concentrated view in the appraisal of the African American experience. The essays within this text can be useful as supplemental readings for a seminar-type course or for a more individualized course of study to offer a detailed look into a particular topic of interest. It was designed for introductory to African American studies courses and others who are interested in the field.

Alphonso Simpson, Jr. is the director of African American studies in the College of Arts and Letters at the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh. He received his Ph. D. in 2001 from the University of Wyoming, where he studied curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in African American music and music education. His current research interests include African American music, Black male/female relationships, the retention rate of Black males in post-secondary education, and the African American religious experience.
