Adam's Rib: a Witchy Brew of Christian Myth
Robert Gillooly
Author Robert Gillooly has written a provocative new book on religion titled Adam?s Rib. The book notes the surprising fact that most Europeans no longer believe in a personal God ? and suggests that Americans may be headed in the same direction. The book reveals for the first time that virtually all Christian beliefs were ?borrowed? from ancient religious myths and therefore are themselves fanciful. In short, credit the ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman religions as the source of Christian beliefs ? and that should raise a few eyebrows in the Christian world, something akin to finding a vampire in the sacristy.
Further, the book documents that the major events in the life of Christ ? his heralded coming, virgin birth, divine nature, redemptive death, resurrection and ascension ? were all events associated with mythical personages who preceded Christ, and who appear to have served as models for his own wondrous existence. It seems the Christian fathers endowed their man-god with the same miraculous powers to be found in other gods of the era. Overall, the book will be greatly relished by young people, and surely by those whom Time has disguised as adults, looking for answers to the fundamental questions. Adam?s Rib could change the way you think about religion.
