Generation
Richard Phillips
The time is a twenty-year period of history between 1914 and 1934, and is the story of a young man caught between two worlds and two generations. This is exemplified in the "Old World", represented by his country of Ireland, amidst the turmoil of a World War, and the civil conflicts within; and a "New World", with America as its symbol of newness and change."The War To End All Wars" marked the end of the traditional ways of life for an older generation in Europe, and created the beginnings of a new, free, more open society across the Atlantic. This new emerging generation was reflected in an America which opened its shores to those who brought with them the ambition and optimism to overcome all obstacles. We follow Michael Philbin from boyhood to young manhood, as he flees the violence and tragedy of his country to seek a future in an unknown land which may enable him to fulfill his destiny. The tale of Michael Philbin and his quest represents the bridge between those two generations. Yet the best of both eras will eventually forge a unique blend of people, tempered by the horrors of war, and hardened by the onslaught of an economic depression. This is a story about one of that generation.
