Marc Notes: Originally published: 1996.; Includes bibliographical references. Publisher Marketing: To what extent is being a lesbian an assumed identity? This collection of essays examines how women use lesbianism to invent themselves, to understand how they fit into the world, and to imagine notions of community. These expressions of community range through dance club culture, through lesbian wedding ceremonies, from lesbian life in the 1920s to lesbian motherhood in the 1990s. The book has an anthropological focus and shows how the identities that lesbians create, offer them lives with dignity and stability.
