In the 1800s, the U. S. goverment relocated Cherokee and other Native peoples from the southeastern part of the United States to a new Indian Territory. More land was needed for European settlers,but most Native people did not want to leave their homes. Removed by soldiers, they were forced on a march of hardship and death, called the Trail of Tears.
