Voltaire (François-Marie Arouet) was born into a wealthy Parisian family in 1694. His intellectual powers made him a justly influential figure in the Enlightenment, but he took issue with the philosophy of Optimism espoused by other intellectuals of his time such as Liebniz, and Bolinbroke, and perhaps best summarized by Alexander Pope's bon mot 'Whatever is, is right'.
