A test has ruined Carmen's life. It has landed her in the eighth-grade gifted class. Her friends don't want to associate with a "genius" and have all deserted her. However, Carmen has a plan to get them back. She follows the best-looking boy in school into the California redwood forest while at summer camp, figuring being seen with him will make her popular again. But he leaves her alone in the cold, damp woods and a pair of bright orange eyes close in on her as darkness descends on the forest. "Are you good to eat?" the owner of the eyes, a shaggy black wolf demands to know. Of course, Carmen trembles in fear, just like any sensible person would. The thing looks half-starved and pretty mangy. A few tuffs of gray fur mix randomly in its mostly coal black and very shaggy coat. Drool streams freely out of its mouth, seeping between its sharp white teeth. Worst of all, the creature wants to teach her about the trees and she just isn't interested. She tolerates the annoying animal anyway because it promises to help her find her way back to camp. But instead, it leads her deeper into the forest where she discovers a terrifying secret explaining why one lone wolf can talk. "Wolves Don't Talk" is the first novel in the Carmen Pimentel Time Traveler series.
