The Missionary Family: Managing Stress Effectively

ABOUT THE BOOK: Hundreds of missionaries go home each year due to stress affecting themselves and/or their families. Hundreds of others remain on the field but struggle with reduced effectiveness from bearing the burden of stress. The Missionary Family: Managing Stress Effectively provides sound biblical and practical principles to help missionaries and their family members manage stress and become more effective in ministry. An integrated approach, these principles touch causes, effects, and management techniques in each part of the human being-spiritual, physical, mental, emotional, and behavioral. **** ABOUT THE AUTHOR: The author has over forty years of experience in ministry, including extensive missions experience in the United States and overseas. While in college, he served as a church-planting summer missionary in Oregon. After serving as pastor and staff minister in Tennessee, Louisiana, and Florida, he became the director of the Missions Department of the Tennessee Baptist Convention and then served as executive director of the West Virginia Convention of Southern Baptists. A professor at Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary since 2001, he also has served in numerous interim pastorates. Dr. Phillips has traveled to twenty-six countries on six continents, including multiple missions to several countries. He has worked with missionaries, regional mission leaders, and indigenous pastors. Phillips has provided training for national and regional leaders for several Baptist Unions in sixteen trips to countries of the former Soviet Union. He has been recognized by the Russian Union of Evangelical Christians-Baptists for service to its denominational leaders and pastors across the nation. Phillips earned his Master of Divinity and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary including a major in preaching and minor in psychology and counseling. His doctoral study included Advanced Clinical Pastoral Education at Central Louisiana Psychiatric Hospital.
